This 100% cotton tea towel is printed with a colorful design depicting a metate grinding stone, based on an original hand carved block print.

Each towel is made of 130 thread count high quality flour sack cotton, approximately 27 x 27 inches, with an image size of 15.5 x 21 inches

This design (and the Molinillo Tribute design) are meant to pay homage to the physical and emotional labor involved in the day-to-day tasks that make domestic life possible. Stone metates like the one shown here are used to grind corn, chile peppers, and other food staples which become the basis for many traditional meals. Metates are often treated as family heirlooms and passed down through generations of women. A beautiful object in itself, I wanted to depict the metate with reverence, and therefore show reverence to the action of domestic labor as well. The preparation of food is of particular interest to me as it essential for our basic survival, but also provides pleasure, serves an act of affection, and creates the foundation of shared experience with those we share a table with.
